The hardest part is lying to her. The plane leaves at eleven pm, and I was told to be at the airport no later than eight. I tell Jen I need to go for a walk after we come home, and she agrees with a relief in her eyes that hints at how exhausted she truly is. As I leave the house she's almost asleep, glazed in front of the TV.

The cab ride passes in a blur of doubt and cold, clinging fear. I hold my passport in a death grip, telling myself again I can do this. I must do this.

I buy a carry-on bag and a set of clothes and toiletries at shops that are far too expensive, then line up at the queue. I don't look like a traveller as I join the throng of passengers waiting to board, but I remind myself there's been a death, so it's OK to appear distraught. The tickets are ready for me at the service desk.

All of which brings me here, staring at the tarmac as the engines build and wind-up into a high-pitched howl. I'm beyond scared. The jet thunders and roars and perhaps I scream, or not.

Today I've lied to my sister and stolen from her. Maybe she'll understand when I come back—having proven once and for all this other me cannot be real. I hope so.

I close my eyes, and the weight of sleep pulls at my body even as the pressure mounts in my chest.

Alice, this is Alice. I'm coming for you.
